An Arizona woman who accused former major league pitcher Trevor Bauer of sexual assault has been charged with defrauding the baseball player. The indictment was unsealed Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was arrested last month and charged with one count of theft by deception. According to the indictment, she allegedly stole $100,000 from Bauer by falsely claiming that he had sexually assaulted her.
Bauer has vehemently denied the allegations, and his attorneys have said that they are confident that he will be exonerated. In a statement, Bauer's attorney, Jon Fetterolf, said that the charges against the woman are "baseless" and that she is "trying to extort money from Mr. Bauer."
The woman's attorneys have not yet commented on the charges.
Bauer was suspended for 194 games by Major League Baseball last year after an investigation into the allegations against him. He has not pitched in a major league game since June 2021.
