Command Sergeant Major: The Enlisted Leader
The Command Sergeant Major (CSM) is the highest enlisted rank in the United States Army. It is equivalent to the rank of lieutenant colonel and is held by a Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) in DoD paygrade E-9.
The CSM serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding officer and is responsible for providing guidance and counsel on all matters relating to the welfare, morale, and discipline of the unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
The CSM has a wide range of duties and responsibilities, including:
- Advising the commanding officer on all matters affecting the enlisted force
- Supervising the training, discipline, and performance of enlisted personnel
- Maintaining morale and esprit de corps within the unit
- Representing the enlisted force to the command and other organizations
