The ferry was built by Damen Shipyards in Romania, and is the first new vessel to be introduced on the route in almost two decades.

The ship has been designed with a focus on passenger comfort, with a range of new features including:

  • A new lounge area with panoramic views of the Bass Strait
  • A dedicated children's play area
  • A new bar and café area
  • Improved cabins and seating
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the ship

The Spirit of Tasmania IV will also be more environmentally friendly than its predecessors, with a number of new features designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

These features include:

  • A new hull design that reduces drag
  • More efficient engines
  • Solar panels
  • LED lighting

The Spirit of Tasmania IV is a significant investment in the Bass Strait route, and is expected to boost tourism and trade between Tasmania and the mainland.
