Significant Step Forward For First New Spirit Of Tasmania Ferry

‘Significant step forward’ for first new Spirit of Tasmania ferry

Arrival of first Spirit of Tasmania ferry hull hailed as ‘significant’

The arrival of the first hull for the first new Spirit of Tasmania ferry in Devonport has been hailed as a “significant step forward” in the delivery of the $180 million vessel. The 210-metre-long hull, named ‘Hull 434’, arrived at the city’s port on Friday, July 15, 2022, from Damen Shipyards in Romania, where it was constructed. The hull will now be fitted out at the Tasports’ Devonport shipyard, with the new vessel expected to commence service on the Bass Strait route between Tasmania and mainland Australia in 2024.

Project moving ahead smoothly

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the arrival of the hull was a “significant step forward” in the project. “This important milestone is a sign that the project is well underway and on schedule to deliver a new era of passenger travel and freight movement between Tasmania and the mainland,” Mr Gutwein said. “The construction of this new vessel has been made possible by the Morrison Liberal Government’s commitment of $110 million and represents the largest single investment in Bass Strait passenger travel.”

Job creation and economic benefits

The project is expected to create up to 600 jobs during construction, with a further 150 ongoing jobs once the vessel is operational. “This is great news for Devonport and will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy,” Mr Gutwein said. The new ferry will be able to carry 1,800 passengers and 600 cars, and will feature a range of amenities including restaurants, bars, a cinema, and a children’s play area. “This investment in modern and efficient vessels will deliver a first-class travel experience for Tasmanians and visitors alike,” Mr Gutwein said.
